Learning Outcomes for Shakespeare I

Shakespeare I (English 15) will enable you to undertake formal critical study of Shakespeare's verse in six generic modes — comedy, history, tragedy, romance, epyllion and sonnet. You should expect to learn to

Read Shakespeare's plays and verse with a high level of understanding and enjoyment
Speak and write critically about the plays in terms of their cultural, historical and political significance, as well as their generic, rhetorical, dramatic and theatrical features
Locate, evaluate, digest and comment upon recent critical literature on one work of Shakespeare's
Write and polish a conference paper that others will find intellectually stimulating and a pleasure to read or hear
Comment helpfully on others' writing about Shakespeare
Commit a sonnet or other passage of verse to memory, recite it in public and answer questions about its meaning and art
